The opening day of 2024 Christmas tree sales at Hunter Tree Farm, 7744 35th Ave NE, signals the beginning of the holiday season in the Wedgwood neighborhood in northeast Seattle. Open this year November 22 to December 24, the Christmas tree lot becomes a gathering place for holiday cheer with lights, music and evergreen smells.

The Hunter family has operated this Christmas tree lot for more than sixty years. Even before the present site, the Hunters got their start in Wedgwood at the main business intersection on 35th Ave NE at NE 85th Street.
In the 1950s there were no businesses at the southeast corner of 35th & 85th, and developer Albert Balch agreed to allow the Hunters to sell Christmas trees there. In 1959 the first building, a Tradewell grocery store, opened on that corner and the Hunters were crowded over onto one side of the lot. That’s when they began to look for more space, and in the 1960s they first started selling at 7744 35th Ave NE.

Happy memories of walking to the Hunter Tree Farm in the 1960’s-70’s! My parents owned Wedgewood Pharmacy on the corner of 86th & 35th. Such a great place to grow up. Went to a birthday party for my brother last year at Wedgwood Broiler. What a blast from the past!! Loved it. So glad Hunter’s is still going!!!! Merry Christmas!
